Unnati Handicratfs is a collective formed by UNNATI Rural development society, a local NGO which has promoted many craft based sustainable livelihood projects for communities who had previously depended upon seasonal wage labor and migration for work.
UNNATI Rural Development Society has nurtured women to review and master many of northern Karnataka's craft traditions and techniques such as indigo dyeing of the Neelgar's, Rope Twisting, Folk stitching and Joinery of the Nadaf's, Vegetable tanning/dyeing of hides and leather crafting of the Dhor communities, the crafts women bow earn a livelihood by making high quality, natural dyed, hand spun, hand woven and nonwoven bags from the natural fibers of jute, cotton, banana, mestha fibre, leather and blended fabric.
We are a collective of 135 craftswomen from Rajankatti, Makelmardi, Madanbhavi, Chikkoppa, Hanabaratti and Gajiminaala which are drought prone regions of the Northern end of the state of Karnataka. With a production capacity of 1000 bags per month, UNNATI Rural Development Society under a brand Unnati Handicrafts, with its distinct product-range has carved a niche into the regional and global market in a way that nourishes the local environment and community.
